When it comes to dressing for the holidays, I get a lot of questions about how exactly to do that. Though you can obviously UP the festive vibes for holiday parties – think a sequined dress – dressing for normal life during the holidays is where the questions seem to stem from.
Living in Dallas, we luckily (or unluckily when I’m craving big seasonal changes) don’t deal with any extreme temps during winter, so I don’t have to worry about how to make heavy outwear feel holiday-ish or anything. And if I’m being honest, my wardrobe for the most part just doesn’t change a ton based on holidays — I’m much more of a seasonal dresser than focused on holidays. And of course throwing in some statement holiday pieces when we’re in Thanksgiving and Christmas week, but I guess what I’m trying to say is I’m a fan of minimal and muted holiday outfits for daily life. Ones where the fabric or print feels like holidays to me, but it’s doesn’t need to have a Christmas tree on it, ya know? That’s just my opinion!
For one, I just can’t afford (nor do I really want to) to go buy an entire new closet based on holiday attire, and two it’s just not me. I’m a “let’s dress up the neutrals to feel like the holidays or season” kinda gal. And while doing some shopping at Target recently – legit one of my favorite places in the whole world, anyone else?! – I decided to give my closet a minor seasonal/holiday makeover. The pieces are so crazy affordable yet quality and I ended up spending hours in the fitting room…oops.
I knew I needed some new looks for both day and night, and you can see the outfits I got in each of these looks. And YES both entire outfits, head-to-freakin’-toe are from Target. See?? Would you have been able to resist either?!
For day-time dressing during these months, I like to stick to neutrals but more seasonal-appropriate colors, cuts, and fabrics. I love the look of long cardigans around the holidays – they are just very winter chic to me. I’m a stripes girl forever, and I basically treat it as a basic under clothes in the winter when layering.
Loving the laid back fit of the jeans here and then the booties… can we talk about them?! LOVE the deep chestnut color. I think they’re a perfect staple for everyday wear, and really into this color for day time. I ended up wearing this outfit to ring the bell at the Salvation Army here in Dallas, a tradition that I’m always excited about. It’s still mild temps in Dallas so the light layering was perfection.
Then, I found this drape-y dream of a cream shirt at Target and instantly fell in love with the bow. It’s classic and chic and I’m obsessed with this – pretty sure you’ll see it on the blog a few more times. This is the perfect “holiday” shirt in my opinion – the material and bow make it feel appropriate but it’s not over-the-top, right? And how cute would it be with a festive velvet skirt for a party?
OK, but back to the rest. I wore this blouse to a friends’ engagement dinner recently and got a bunch of compliments on it. I paired it with these velvet skinny black pants – I’ve been in need of some black pants that were comfy and fit well, mission accomplished – and pumps. I’m going to walk around Dallas’ Downtown Wanderland in a couple weeks with friends and grab drinks before, and this might be the perfect look for dinner and then seeing the lights downtown.
Who knew a little shopping for paper towels would lead to so many great pieces, right?? (#TYPICAL) So happy with the neutral and muted holiday pieces that I’ve added to my wardrobe.
What trends are you especially excited about this holiday season?
