Wedding season is officially here, and if your calendar looks anything like mine, you’ve got a few save-the-dates already pinned to your fridge. The good news? This is genuinely one of my favorite times of year to get dressed. Spring and summer weddings are basically a free pass to wear something that makes you feel like you—and I am always here for that.

I know the “what do I wear to a wedding” spiral is real, but here’s my number one piece of advice: don’t be afraid of color. This time of year is practically begging for it. A vibrant coral, a soft buttery yellow, a bold cobalt—these shades just work in spring and summer light, and you will never regret showing up to an outdoor ceremony in something that feels joyful and fun. Save the neutrals for fall. Right now, color is your friend.

That said, there are so many directions you can go depending on the vibe of the wedding. A black tie affair calls for something a little more elevated—think a flowy maxi or a structured midi in a rich jewel tone. A garden party or beach ceremony is the perfect excuse for something lighter, more relaxed, maybe even a little floral. And a casual backyard wedding? Honestly, that’s where you can have the most fun with it.

What to Look For

When I’m shopping for a wedding guest dress, I’m thinking about a few things: How long will I be in this? (Comfort matters more than people admit.) Will I be inside or outside? (Fabric choice is everything in the heat.) And can I wear it again? The best wedding guest dresses are the ones that earn a second and third outing… to a bridal shower, a birthday dinner, a date night. Versatility is always a win.
