It’s simple really; you just pick two things from your closet that are (or even almost) the same color, put them together, and BAM! you’ve got yourself a fashion-forward-ish monochromatic look. hah, yeah so I’m sure some of you all are thinking….uh huh, not so much. And you know what, you’re right; it’s actually not quite that simple. I don’t think there’s really any magic formula to making a monochromatic look work, but I can give you some pointers that I use when assembling an outfit of this style/type.

Firstly, I try and go for one mono-color-based look or the other: either tone on tone or monochromatic. That being said, if I’m shooting for monochromatic, the shade of the two pieces should be almost identical. Otherwise, it looks like you got dressed in the dark (and we wouldn’t want that!). On the other hand, if you’re going for the tone on tone look, make sure there’s enough contrast between the two shades of color (e.g. baby and royal blue, mint and emerald green) so that the pairing looks intentional.

Secondly, I think it’s easiest to pair two different textures of the same color; this trick usually always does the trick for me when trying to make an outfit work. Also, mixing two prints, with the same color base, seems to be a great pair as well! (e.g. gingham & polka dots and/or stripes).

If any of you have any other tips or little secrets, please DO tell in the comments below! These are just the two most obvious that come to mind, but I’m sure there are plenty more! I hope you all have a wonderful Friday and an even better weekend. Don’t forget that Sunday if Mother’s day! xoxo
