If you know someone graduating this year, chances are, you’re on the hunt for a few good grad gift ideas. I still remember graduating from college and receiving some of the most memorable and thoughtful gifts ever. I’ve kept a lot of them over the past 10(ish) years too.
Whenever I think about buying a grad gift, my main goal is to get the graduate something they’ll actually use in “the real world” or something they can upgrade (ie, nice luggage, a nice wallet, better cooking pans).
I know a lot of people stress about what to buy or how much to spend on a graduate they know, so I thought I’d do a little research on graduate gift etiquette for y’all too.
when do you buy a grad gift for someone?
The main thing most people want to know is when you need to buy a graduation gift for someone. Of course, you’re going to buy a gift for a family member or someone you’re close with, but what about the neighbor down the street or someone you’re only loosely acquainted with?
The rule I found most often online is that you definitely should buy a gift if you were invited to a graduation party or ceremony. If you just got a graduation announcement, you can play it by ear and use judgment based on how close you are to the person.
how much should you spend on a grad gift?
Another question I kept coming across is how much to spend on a grad gift. Really, you have to think about your budget. There aren’t really hard and fast rules when it comes to a budget — honestly, as cliche as it sounds, it’s the thought that counts.
I’d say if you’re younger, it’s realistic to spend anywhere from $50-$150, but as you get older and become more established, going over that is appreciated. Again, you’ve got to do what’s comfortable for you and your budget.
Should you give cash or a personal gift for graduation?
I’m always a big fan of giving something personal to the person instead of cash, but obviously, there are times cash is a better option (for instance, if you’re traveling and don’t want to carry something in your luggage). If you do end up giving cash, it can be a nice touch to write a personalized card or letter to include with the gift.
