If y’all have ever seen my mom on Insta Stories, you know that she’s basically mom/wife/hostess/designer of the decade. I’m constantly inspired by her creativity and her ability to do it ALL with a smile on her face – it’s seriously so impressive and #goals! From little things like how she always has the house decorated for holidays (something I’m trying to get better at) to how she always wrapped presents with a unique theme each Christmas. I used to love waiting to see what the presents would look like under the tree, and always noticed the little ways to make her wrapping stand out. The woman can do no wrong!
Now, as I’m getting older and am trying to #adult more, I’m doing my best to mimic her magical wrapping ways this year. When I was home for Thanksgiving, I asked her a few tips and I was basically blown away by how freaking easy she made it sound. BUT, when it comes down to it, her ideas WERE pretty simple – they just take some planning and creativity. She let me share her secrets below, and she already did most of the work for us, so #winning. If you’re wanting to spruce up your wrapping job this year, read on.
Stick to a theme
Under my Christmas tree usually looks like a hot mess because I basically grab whatever wrapping paper is on sale. Or use random pieces from year’s past – not a good look. My mama said that she always sticks to a general color and texture theme. Maybe it’s red with gold ribbon, or a personal favorite, brown kraft paper with “natural” elements like greenery.
Think of nature
Back to those natural elements that I love. My mom has used everything from olive leaves, to pine cones, to small pieces of a pine tree to decorate presents, and I love this look! Plus, if you’re using pine things, the presents smell sooo good. Think of tying a piece of greenery through the ribbon, or even placing a scent like rosemary or sage under a bow or in an envelope. She likes using mini pine cones on presents too, and says you can find these for really cheap at a Christmas tree farm or even in your yard!
Tie on twine
I’ve noticed that my mom usually skips really holiday-ish bows and instead uses simple twine. You know the annoying ones (no offense if you love these lol) It’s a classic look that is more chic than some huge bow, and I swear it’s one of the reasons her presents always look fab. Simple but effective is the name of the game!
Get creative with name tags
Another simple thing that my mama has done is write our names with a metallic Sharpie on presents. This looks especially great on kraft paper, or a wrapping paper without too much design (so you can actually see the name). Or, I’ve seen her write our names on leaves and tie those on with twine. Basically, instead of using the name tag that comes with your bag – or the holiday stickers that are kinda cheesy slash ugly – consider name tags that are unique! You can tie Lego’s on a present for kids and write their names on those, or write names on star cards and clothespins – get creative y’all!
Now that you know how to wrap the gifts all pretty, let’s talk about what to put inside – just as important, duh! In order to keep things like veryyy simple, my mama also suggested having go-to destination for presents. Basically, she finds a store where she’s loving their current line, and does all her shopping there (or as much as possible obviously). I took that tip and this year I’m all about Kate Spade New Yorkl. I mean, I’ve been a huge fan of Kate Space since forever, but this year I pretty much got ALL my sisters and moms’ presents there – not to mention a few surprises for my roommates. Hopefully they aren’t reading this ha! I’ve always found the line to be fun, feminine, and just unique, which I appreciate. Here are some things I’m eyeing and buying from KSNY this season.
