Follow the light — an imperative, simple phrase that is both inspiring and convicting at the same time.
This simple demand could mean a number of things to you, depending on where you are in your life, your faith, and your overall perspective of the world. But I’ve only ever known (or valued) one meaning of what it means to live in the light. And it has nothing to do with following the rules, chasing my dreams, being nice all the time, or even the general notion of simply being a good person. But instead, following the light, means something much more powerful and, in my opinion, realistic and obtainable than the other cultural stigmas with which this phrase might be associated.
“I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:2).
I understand that different people could have different interpretations of what “light” is in their life; and I respect that. I really do. But for me, personally, light means truth. Honesty. Light means gentleness, silence, and stillness. Further, and more specifically, it is only when I am being still and quiet with my time and transparent and gentle with others, that I am able to find experience this truth and light. And I am not only able to witness it, but can discern and comprehend the weight of it.
When I’m quote-on-quote following the light, there is a sense of patience, discipline, and humility in my life*. And like anything in life, the more I follow this path and, in a sense, practice this lifestyle, the easier and more natural it becomes. The more I chase after this truth, the better I am able to discern it and the more confident I become in my desire and willingness to chase it, despite the million contradictions and doubts that besiege me.
What does following the light mean to you?
*I say this in a humble and self-reflective tone, rather than a confident or holier-than-though one.
