Hey y’all! Today feels like a fake Monday to me since I’ve been working the past week with Fashion Week. I’m actually currently finishing this post in the back of a cab on my way from the Lela Rose presentation to more meetings. The madness is real, y’all, but so much fun. But I really wanted to share this look and talk real quick about how I put this outfit together in my mind and in real life. I think it’s such a pretty slash chic outfit, but it’s also somewhat unique because of everything going on.

The second I bought this skirt I knew I wanted to make the whole vibe monochromatic. The skirt is so beautiful that I didn’t want any other colors to outshine it or take away from it, you know? Plus, I love a good neutral monochromatic vibe.

The key to pulling the look off – I’ve found – is to mix textures and shades of a color when going monochromatic. Finding the perfect balance can be tricky, so I wanted to share what I always keep in mind. Believe me, I’ve #failed with this look before and learned from that. Here’s what helps:

  • Stay in one color family – Well duh, right? That’s the key to making up a monochromatic outfit. But yea, you want head to toe in one color shade. I even like my bag to match. Here, I obviously chose nude/tan.
  • Don’t mix more than 3 textures together – If you do more, things will get messy. I chose silk, knit and suede here, and I think it really works for fall. Consider the season and choose 2-3 textures to pair together.
  • Have one standout piece – For me, it’s the skirt. I find monochrome to be boring if there’s not one piece that I’m obsessing about.
  • When in doubt, go neutral – Monochrome in a bold shade can be chic when done well, but it can also be a major hot mess. I tend to go monochrome when I’m feeling uninspired or unsure of what to wear, and a neutral is always a good bet. I also love a white, gray, or black monochrome moment.

OK, those are my quick tips for making monochrome work. Do y’all like the monochrome look? Are you in love with this skirt like I am?
