I’ve been making this recipe from Gimme Delicious for at least 3-4 years. My kids love it, but if your kids aren’t fans of spice, you can reduce or skip the sriracha altogether. You can even replace it with a little ketchup for a sweeter sauce.
I also like to toss in some small, kid-friendly veggies like chopped carrots, peas, or bell peppers. Usually, I’ll just stir-fry them alongside the chicken for some added texture and nutrition.
A few more tips I’ve picked up when making this sesame chicken recipe —
— If you’re short on time, using pre-minced garlic from a jar or ginger paste instead of grating fresh ginger will save you a few minutes and it has a just as much flavor IMO.
— To make the chicken extra crispy, I sometimes toss the coated chicken in the cornstarch and let it sit for about 5 minutes before stir-frying. It gives the coating a bit more crunch.
— If you like a thicker sauce, add a small cornstarch slurry (1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water) to the sauce while it’s simmering — it’ll thicken up nicely.
— Don’t worry if you don’t have sesame oil. Olive oil works just fine, but a few drops of toasted sesame oil at the end really bring out the flavor.
20-Minute Sesame Chicken Recipe
ingredients
1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts (cut into 1/2 inch strips or cubes)
2 tablespoons cornstarch
Pinch each salt & pepper
Tablespoon olive oil, or sesame
Cooked white rice for serving
Small bunch spring onions, scallions, chopped
For the sauce
3 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons honey
Teaspoon sriracha, add more for more heat
Teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
Clove garlic, minced
2 tablespoons sesame seeds
Tablespoon sesame oil, optional
direction
In a medium bowl, whisk together soy sauce, honey, sriracha, ginger, garlic, sesame seeds, and sesame oil. Set aside for later use.
In a separate, large bowl, toss the chicken with cornstarch, seasoning with a pinch of salt and pepper. Heat a large skillet over high heat for about 2 minutes. Add some oil, then stir-fry the chicken for 5-6 minutes until it turns golden and crispy. Pour in the sauce, allowing it to simmer for 3-4 minutes, until thickened and sticky.
Take the chicken off the heat, sprinkle with chopped green onions and additional sesame seeds, if desired. Serve hot with white rice or noodles.
